A Letter from Rick Perry

While at LSU I joined the Student Athletic Board, a volunteer support organization for LSU Athletics.  That led to being hired as a student-worker to write and produce a newsletter for the newly created Varsity Club.  Upon graduation, Athletic Director Paul Dietzel offered me an entry level position in the Athletic Department.  Thus began over forty years of service to my alma mater.

In 1987 after stints in the Athletic Department and as Director of Chapters for the LSU Alumni Association, Richard Lipsey, TAF’s first Chairman of Board, offered me an opportunity to join John Ferguson, Ernie Hill and Jamie Graham as a member of the newly formed organization’s original staff.  Over the next three decades TAF became one of collegiate athletics’ most successful fundraising operations, funding and overseeing the construction and renovation of almost one half billion dollars of athletic facilities and providing scholarships, programs, and resources to help thousands of student-athletes achieve success in competition, the classroom and life.

Making all this possible was a talented team of employees dedicated to providing support for our student-athletes, along with the essential leadership provided by the many volunteers who have tirelessly served as members of the TAF Board of Directors.  But the most important contributions to the efforts of TAF have been the generosity and support provided by the best fans in all of collegiate athletics, the LSU Tiger faithful. I hope each of you takes great pride in the many Tiger Championships over the years and the role you have played in helping shape the future for a multitude of LSU student-athletes.

Recently I informed TAF leadership of my intention to retire. A search committee has been formed to identify potential candidates for my successor. I am confident that the search process will generate a diverse pool of well-qualified candidates from which a new leader will be chosen. With your help, I know that our new CEO will be successful and that TAF will continue to flourish in the pursuit of its mission of support for our Tigers.

In looking back, I recognize that I have been truly blessed in having been able devote four decades of my life in service to an institution that I love dearly.  It is rewarding to know that my efforts in some small way may have benefited LSU student-athletes while adding to the experiences and treasured memories of Tiger fans.

I thank you for your support and friendship through the years.  I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life, which I assure you will include seeing many of you at future Tiger games.

Forever LSU and Geaux Tigers!
