Student-Athletes Take Part in 'Go Healthy Challenge'
LSU student-athletes shared their physical fitness knowledge this weekend, taking part in the American Heart Association's "Go Healthy Challenge for Kids," a childhood obesity awareness day held Saturday at Cortana Mall.
Members of the men's basketball, track and field, gymnastics and swimming and diving teams led fitness stations, demonstrating physical fitness exercises and helping kids perform the various activities. The fitness stations included jump ropes, sit-ups and several strength and balance exercises. Children also completed health and nutrition challenges.
Nearly 1,000 Baton Rouge-area kids participated in the event, which aimed to raise awareness about childhood obesity in the capital area. Louisiana ranks fourth in adult obesity in the nation, and nearly one in three Louisiana school-aged children is overweight or obese.
"This was a really great event today," said men's basketball player Storm Warren. "The kids got active and were happy about participating at the stations. I love working with kids and am glad we could spend the day helping out and showing them how important physical fitness is in your everyday life." more

Pinckney Wins Relay Gold at World Juniors
LSU sprinter Takeia Pinckney picked up her second medal at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, Saturday after helping the United States win gold in the 4x100-meter relay.
Pinckney teamed with Stormy Kendrick, Dezerea Bryant and Ashley Collier to record a junior world-leading time of 43.44 seconds and hold off runner-up Germany by three tenths of a second to take the victory.
"Our chemistry was great," Pinckney said following the race. "We got the stick around the track and did our best. We wanted the record, but we got the junior world-leading time and a gold medal."
A sophomore-to-be from Atlanta, Pinckney also captured a silver medal at the competition on Wednesday with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash (11.49).

LSU Takes Stage at 2010 SEC Media Day
Southeastern Conference Media Days came to an end here Friday as LSU head coach Les Miles, quarterback Jordan Jefferson, cornerback Patrick Peterson and linebacker Kelvin Sheppard addressed members of the media at the Wynfrey Hotel.
Over 800 members of the media were in attendance to greet the Tigers, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Auburn on the final day of Media Days. LSU began its rotation through the various rooms of media at 11 a.m. and concluded with Miles joining ESPN's College Football Live at 2 p.m.
Miles and the players did one-on-one interviews with ESPN, ESPN SEC, ESPNU, CBS, Comcast Sports Southeast, Fox Sports Net, Sirius/XM Radio, the SEC Network and the SEC Digital Network. They also met with members of the print and electronic media in separate ballrooms of the Wynfrey Hotel.
The Tigers return 12 starters - six on offense and four on defense - from a squad that finished with a 9-4 record and a second-place SEC Western Division finish in 2009. Peterson and Sheppard were unanimous preseason first-team All-SEC selections by the league coaches and media.
With SEC Media Days complete, the Tigers now turn their attention to preseason camp. Players report to campus on Wednesday, Aug. 4 with the first workout schedule a day later on Thursday, Aug. 5. LSU Fan Day is set for Sunday, Aug. 8, at the Maravich Center and Carl Maddox Field House.

LSU Volleyball Facilities
The 2010 season marks LSU volleyball's 29th season in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the largest volleyball venue in the SEC. The structure, which was renamed in honor of the all-time LSU and NCAA men's basketball scoring leader on July 22, 1988, seats 13,215 and ranks as one of the finest college athletic arenas in the nation.
On July 1, 2004, the management of the Maravich Center came under the direction of the LSU Athletics Department and underwent a multi-year refurbishment. The renovations have included new television lighting, an interior makeover and new roof surface.
Prior to the 2007 season, the main arena got a new subfloor and a new playing floor. In the summer of 2008, the auxiliary practice gym also received a new floor.
The outside windows of the building now feature the Tiger mascot running around the arena. In addition, all seats in the 100 lower level are scheduled to be replaced for the 2010 season.
Volleyball fans can see a redesigned concourse with video and graphic displays, renovated concession stands and video kiosks showcasing the best of the sports that play in the building.
Prior to the start of the 2010 season, the auxiliary gym located underground in the north section of the arena has been converted to a volleyball only practice facility.
The defending SEC champions enjoy the comforts of a spacious locker room. The two-tiered, fully carpeted facility features individual cubicles for each athlete, a meeting room and storage area. The first phase of a graphics project spotlighting the Tiger volleyball program is scheduled to begin in 2010. more
