Mike the Tiger Habitat Update
The ponds and the waterfall have been turned off due to the enormous amount of mud that Mike carries in to the pond from the muddy areas. Mud and other materials settle in the pipes creating a blockage, which causes the pumps to shut down.
None of this affects Mike’s health. He still has 24-hour access to water and shelter in his night house.
Plans are in place to make the necessary repairs. Due to Mike’s active nature we cannot keep him in his night house all day, so the work will be performed at night.
For information on the Mike the Tiger habitat project, please visit the official home of Mike at www.mikethetiger.com.
LSU News & Notes
Fowles, Chancellor Receive SEC's Highest Honors from AP
Fowles, a senior center for the LSU women’s basketball team, was also named as a unanimous first-team All-SEC selection and was joined on the five-player first-team by teammate Quianna Chaney.
Erica White earned second-team honors.
The honors, released by the AP on Tuesday, were voted on by members of the media around the nation.
“It is nice for this program to receive these honors,” Chancellor said. “The coaches and players worked so hard all season to accomplish the goal of becoming SEC Champions and theses honors reflect the hard work. I am personally honored to be named coach of the year, but all of the credit goes to my assistant coaches and players.”
Chancellor, in his first season as the head coach of the Lady Tigers, guided LSU to a perfect 14-0 league mark. He was also named Coach of the Year by the league’s 12 coaches and is one of four finalists for the Naismith National Coach of the Year award.
Fowles, also one of four finalists for the Naismith National Player of the Year award, is just the second LSU player to receive the SEC’s Player of the Year honor, joining Seimone Augustus who earned the honor in 2005 and 2006.
Fowles led LSU to the program’s third SEC regular season title with 17.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. The Miami, Fla., native also shot a league-best 59.9 percent from the floor and collected 19 double doubles, including 10 in league play.
“This means a lot to me. I share this award with my teammates and my coaches. Without them I would not be able to accomplish what I have on the court,” Fowles said.
Chaney, who averaged 15.0 points per game, received her first first-team All-SEC honor. The senior from Baton Rouge was named second-team all-conference last season.
White, who averaged 7.3 points and 4.4 assists per game overall and 9.1 points and 4.4 assists per conference game, earned her first SEC post season honor. The Jacksonville, Fla., native also led the league with a 2.46 assist-to-turnover ratio.
LSU will host Jackson State on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. CDT in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The Lady Tigers received a No. 2 seed in the New Orleans region.

Baseball Looks to End Skid Against Tulane on Throwback Night
LSU will wear throwback uniforms Wednesday night that resemble the attire the Tigers wore in the early 20th Century. Former LSU infielder Warren Morris, the hero of the 1996 College World Series championship game, will sign autographs in Alex Box Stadium from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Tickets for the game are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12. Tickets are available at Alex Box Stadium two hours prior to first pitch, or they may be purchased and printed at www.LSUsports.net.
The LSU-Tulane game will be carried by the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (WDGL 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge). Live audio and video of the game may also be accessed in the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net.
LSU has lost five straight games, including a three-game sweep last weekend at Tennessee to open Southeastern Conference play.
“We’re going to have to play much better in order to beat an outstanding team like Tulane,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Our kids are still very upbeat and optimistic; no one has a negative mindset, but we realize we have to improve, especially on offense. I think we have a solid pitching staff that can hold the opposition to three to five runs per game. We have to be able to produce more runs in order to win against some very tough competition.
“Let me add that our players are excited to have the opportunity to wear throwback uniforms for Wednesday night’s game. It’s a great way to honor the LSU players of the past who helped to establish the rich history of this program.”

Margaret Champagne Womack Donates $250,000 to LSU:
The LSU School of Social Work will be able to provide more support in the area of addictive disorders thanks to a gift from one of its most prominent alumni. The School announced on March 17, 2008 that Margaret Champagne Womack has made a gift commitment of $250,000 to increase the Margaret Champagne Womack Professorship in Addictive Disorders. Womack’s gift will be matched by the Louisiana Board of Regents, raising the total benefit to the LSU School of Social Work to $410,000.
“Margaret Champagne Womack’s support of the School of Social Work has been an essential component in the success of the program,” said LSU School of Social Work Dean Christian E. Molidor. “This additional gift from Mrs. Womack will propel our efforts to train skilled, competent, and ethical social workers to address the increasing problems with addictive disorders in the state. We are also working to leverage these funds to increase student support for those interested in dedicating their careers to this field.”
Womack’s gift to LSU will support and enhance the Addictive Disorders Training Initiative. Currently, there is a critical need for more professionals skilled in the area of addictions. The LSU School of Social Work will address this need with Womack’s support, creating a stipend program for master-level students who have expressed an interest in the addictions field. These graduate students will enroll in addictions courses and perform internships in a specialized addictions or secondary diagnosis environment. In addition to preparing graduate students, the School will offer continuing education opportunities for providers and social work professionals.
The funds will also support addictions-related research focusing on the issues most relevant to Louisiana. The School of Social Work will also develop systems to effectively disseminate current research and the best treatment practices to those working in the field of addictive disorders.
“I am so pleased to be able to make this commitment to the School of Social Work to meet the ever-growing workforce demands for trained addictions professionals,” said Margaret Champagne Womack. “The addictive disorders training initiative was a well thought out strategy to address a critical need in this state.”
Womack would also like to challenge other friends and alumni of LSU to give to the LSU School of Social Work.
A 1967 graduate of LSU with a Master’s degree in Social Work in 1988, Mrs. Womack been a generous contributor to LSU over the years. She was LSU’s 1996 General College Alumnus of the Year, and is a philanthropic leader whose influence can be felt virtually anywhere on the LSU campus.
The widow of Baton Rouge business legend Milton Womack, Margaret is well-known for her involvement in the community. She is a Founders Forum Member of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, the former director of the Stop Rape Crisis Center and has worked with countless charitable and non-profit organizations such as the Baton Rouge Symphony and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille.
Margaret Womack’s gift to the LSU School of Social Work also moves LSU closer to the goal of completing the Forever LSU campaign. Forever LSU is a university-wide effort to raise $750 million in support for LSU by the end of the year 2010.
